  2. court stating the punishment to be imposed 
  3. following a plea of guilty or a finding of 
  4. guilt by a jury. Before a sentence is 
  5. imposed, the antecedents (criminal record) 
  6. and any relevant reports on the defendant are 
  7. made known to the judge and the defence may 
  8. make a plea in mitigation of the sentence.
